Robert F. Kennedy Scholars Abroad Program Established
Stamford, CT – A new scholarship program to enable high school students to study abroad this summer has been established by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights with funding by the American Institute For Foreign Study (AIFS) Foundation.
The RFK Scholars Abroad Program is a three-year program and is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2009. Two annual scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $5,000 each, which the recipients can use toward any recognized academic study abroad program sponsored by their school or private organizations. Minority candidates and students with demonstrated financial need are encouraged to apply.
"We are excited about this new program and feel it has great potential to further our mission of bringing the world together," said Melanie French, Executive Director and Trustee of the AIFS Foundation. "The late Senator Kennedy was instrumental in the founding of the AIFS Foundation, and we believe that the missions of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights and our organization are complimentary."
To be eligible for the scholarships, students must be in excellent academic standing (3.0 GPA or higher), have an interest in Social Justice, and write an essay on the topic to be submitted along with their application. The application deadline is April 15, 2009.
A committee comprised of representatives from both the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights and the AIFS Foundation will select the winners of the scholarship. An award ceremony will be held in June to announce the first ever recipients of this scholarship.
