President Obama and AIFS Encourage More Students to Study Abroad in China

Study Abroad Leader Offering Several Program Options, Scholarships

STAMFORD, CT – November 19, 2009 – Yesterday, President Obama announced his intentions to "dramatically expand" the number of American students studying in China. The American Institute For Foreign Study (AIFS), a leader in study abroad, hopes to assist President Obama's goal by offering high school and college students the industry's best programs in China in addition to more than half a million dollars in scholarships.

"China continues to emerge as a world power and will play a very large role in our global future," states AIFS President and CEO William Gertz. "We are fully on board with the President to encourage more students to study in China and prepare our future leaders for tomorrow's world."

President Obama, making the announcement at a town hall meeting with future Chinese leaders in Shanghai on Tuesday, discussed the relationship between two of the world's superpowers. Obama spoke about the exchange of students and how it "will help determine the destiny of the 21st century" with "no better ambassadors to offer than our young people."

AIFS is delighted to offer the country's "young people" the opportunity to become ambassadors to China. AIFS Summer Advantage provides high school students with the opportunity to spend four weeks in China during the summer, studying at Nanjing University. The program includes trips to Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou.

College students can choose to study in Beijing, Nanjing and/or Shanghai on any of AIFS' semester, academic year or summer programs in China. In the summer of 2010, AIFS will be introducing an internship program in China to better prepare America's future "ambassadors" through pertinent job opportunities while abroad. AIFS' comprehensive programs include housing, meals, transcripts, insurance and a rich variety of built-in cultural activities and excursions.

AIFS has also recently announced it will offer $600,000 in study abroad scholarships in 2010, more than doubling last year's total.
